What is the difference between hardwired and plug-in wall sconces?

Hardwired sconces connect directly to the home’s electrical wiring through a wall box — they require installation by a licensed electrician but offer the cleanest finished look with no visible cord. Plug-in sconces have a cord that runs down the wall to a nearby outlet — they can be installed without an electrician and are easier to move, making them ideal for renters. Many plug-in styles are designed with the cord as a design element; others offer a cord cover or fabric sleeve for a cleaner appearance.

How high should wall sconces be installed?

In a hallway or living room, install wall sconces at 60–66 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture — approximately eye level when standing. Flanking a bathroom mirror, position sconces at 60–65 inches from the floor, on either side of the mirror rather than above it for the most even, shadow-free face lighting. Bedside reading sconces work best positioned 24–36 inches above the mattress surface, centered above the nightstand.
